Edited by three leading experts in the field and with contributions from other experienced scholars, this book provides a historical perspective of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Jamaica, highlighting some of TVET's significant achievements in terms of the evolution of the programmes in schools and training institutions, its impact on workforce development and the economy, and key issues that it faces and must confront as Jamaica embraces emerging technologies and the need to prepare a competent workforce that can function effectively in a competitive knowledge-based economy. This book is intended to be a resource text for undergraduate and graduate level students pursuing technical and vocational education studies, education leadership, and for industry leaders and practitioners as well as policymakers.

Improving School Leadership.jpg

This casebook brings together in one space a variety of cases which are based on issues pertinent to the effective running of schools. The collection of cases provides added value because educators from different levels and types of institutions across the English-speaking Caribbean are not likely to encounter the range of experiences in their specific locations. The cases are mainly focused on incidents related to schools and the individuals who work in schools. Many of these cases have legal implications for school leaders as well as for teachers and include issues that continue to generate debates, such as incidents of violence, sexual abuse, theft, and wrongful dismissals. It is expected that educators who engage these cases will be better prepared to deal with similar incidents in their school settings.

Leadership for Success.jpg

Leadership for Success is intended for a wide cross-section of educators, policymakers, educational planners, parents and the general readers who would like to learn how high-performing principals run schools effectively. The inspiring stories from seventeen seasoned professionals along with the supporting pieces by the editors will resonate with current principals, and educators across the spectrum will appreciate the experiences shared in this volume.

This collection is an ideal resource for the aspiring principal as it provides the framework for making the transition to a leadership role by offering a connection between theory and practice. Senior teachers, who are increasingly being asked to take on responsibilities that have traditionally been the domain of the principals, will also benefit from the excellent information and valuable life experiences herein. The contributors offer vital lessons on the kinds of working relationships that are required among parents, school boards, communities, students, middle managers and the principals to make a difference in school performance.

The contributors to Leadership for Success demonstrate beyond any doubt that it is the quality of leadership that makes a difference in students’ outcomes, no matter the nature of the issues facing the principal. Educators in similar situations may blame their school’s underperformance and poor outcomes on the lack of resources and support from the central ministry but the stories shared here demonstrate that much can be done despite limited resources.

Transforming Leadership Practice.jpg

Transforming Leadership Practice: Examining Dimensions of Performance in Jamaican Schools takes a comprehensive look at what the elements of “leadership” are and how these elements can be applied in the Jamaican school context. This book seeks to address “leadership deficiencies [which] are symptomatic of developing countries such as Jamaica where leadership skills are underdeveloped, and there is a minority of leaders who seem to have the capability to demonstrate these skills”. The author gives a background to school leadership and discusses the philosophical foundation of effective leadership. The wide-ranging chapters then cover areas that impact on leadership, such as gender and leadership in Jamaican schools, facilitating the learner, teacher supervision, and student discipline. Hutton signposts the way to providing effective school leadership currently, highlighting especially the place of STEM and TVET education, and he goes further, presenting his vision for schools of the future.
